Description
HONEYMOON & ALL THE SHIPS AT SEA

Dan Sallitt Double Feature!

Before he made the critically acclaimed The Unspeakable Act (2012), New York-based filmmaker and critic Dan Sallitt wrote and directed these two independent features. Both films adopt a thoughtful, sensitive approach to characters in spiritual distress; like the work of Sallitt’s hero Eric Rohmer, they forgo simple explanations of complex behavior, characterizing their subjects as psychological mysteries and presenting life as miraculously unpredictable. In HONEYMOON (1998, 90 min., 16mm), longtime friends Michael and Mimi, both of whom are sweet but terminally shy, throw caution to the winds and get married—despite the fact they’ve never been physically intimate. In ALL THE SHIPS AT SEA (2004, 64 min., digital projection), Catholic theologian Evelyn embarks on a retreat to the family lake house with her sister Virginia, who’s gone into a paralyzing depression since leaving a religious cult. Evelyn’s mission to help Virginia doesn’t go as planned, as the “normal” sister comes to realize she’s wrestling with many of the same issues as the “troubled” one. (1998 & 2004, 154 min., 16mm & digital)
